On 'the Origins' of Karting From One of its Founders

In my recent post where I explored the origins of karting, my recollection of the chronology of the sport’s beginnings was, shall we say, a bit off. It was while reviewing an interview with Duffy Livingstone, who could be called, the Godfather of Karting, shot in 2005 on my Reunion and Remembrance DVD. As you’ll see, there were quite a few details I left out, as well as a different sequence of events.

Last week, after this year’s vintage karting event at Adams Kart Track had come to an end, the people from RM Motorsports hosted a barbeque. The group had traveled to Riverside all the way from Wixom Michigan in a humongous tractor trailer, and with a contingent of 28 vintage karts and their drivers. While I stood in line to fill my plate with some delicious grilled chicken, I felt a hand on my shoulder, and then its owner playfully jumped ahead of me in line. As it turned out, it was no other than Duffy himself.

We stood in line and chewed the fat. Afterwards, Duffy joined me at the dinner table. I learned that he is very much into flying RC airplanes, and is a vegetarian; so vegan that a signficant portion of his diet consists of raw food. Overall, we spent about 45 minutes talking, and not once did we mention karting, nor did he need to mug for a picture. It was probably a welcome respite for Duffy; and a great remembrance for me.
